Southern California authorities arrested three men on Thursday on suspicion of recklessly starting a brush fire that drove thousands from their homes, according to a report by Fox News.

The suspects, three men in their 20s identified as Jonathan Carl Jarrell, 23, Steven Robert Aguirre, 21, and Clifford Eugene Henry Jr, 22, reportedly started the blaze after tossing paper into a campfire.

According to officials, the men, one of whom is homeless, were trying to keep warm and the fire is believed have been an accident.

"One was very remorseful for starting this fire," said Glendora police chief Tim Staab.
The wildfire, which erupted early Thursday, comes in the middle of a statewide drought, and has destroyed close to 2,000 acres of land in Glendora foothills 25 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

The quickly spreading fire has damaged 17 homes, garages, barns and other buildings and has forced the evacuation of some 2,000 people.
