A non registered dive boat named Aladdin sank on Wednesday (January 29) in Thailand between the islands of Koh Tachai and Koh Bon with 13 people on board.

According to local reports, the boat was believed to be on a four-day live-aboard adventure.

The accident happened at around noon. It is believed that something rammed into the boat propeller and created a hole into the wooden hull. Water started to come in, causing the boat to capsize. It took only a few minutes for the boat to sink in 24 metres of water.

According to the Director of the Similan islands national park, Nat Kongkasem, the boat hull was clearly of poor quality.

The sinking happened so quickly that passengers had to leap for their life. According to local reports, some of them didn't even have time to wear a lifejacket.

The Phuket-based vessel Peter Pan was close by and able to rescue all of them.

''It was just coincidence that our boat was there and could come to the rescue,'' Swedish diver Dennis Karlsson, 46, said. ''It was really, really serious.''

The sinking of the Aladdin is likely to trigger a closer investigation of illegal boats reportedly operating in the region.
