Thousands of riot police were deployed on Friday (February 14) to clear rally sites in Bangkok that have been occupied by protesters for weeks.

At 8:00 a.m., riot police marched their way onto Makkhawan Rangsan Bridge in an attempt to clear makeshift protest camps. Police reclaimed the bridge peacefully as protesters put up little resistance. Authorities said they found ping-pong bombs, knives, slingshots, explosive devices and drugs at the site. Protest leaders dismissed the accusations and said the items did not belong to demonstrators.

Police however failed to seize campsites, which were run by Buddhist monk Luang Pu Buddha Issara, on Chaeng Watthana Road as scuffles broke out between police and protesters. "Today is Makha Bucha Day so we should show Phra Buddha Issara some respect," said Director of of the Centre for Maintaining of Peace and Order Chalerm Yubamrung. Police are to continue clearing the camps on Saturday.

The Bangkok Post reported that police vow to clear rally sites near Government House, the Interior Ministry and the Chaeng Watthana government complex in the next stage of the operation. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has not been able to enter Government House for months.

Witnesses said that the operation were largely peaceful. Many protesters returned to rebuild protest sites after police left.
