Israeli police stormed a sensitive Jerusalem holy site to disperse a violent protest as lawmakers were set to debate its sovereignty on Tuesday (February 25).

The clash took place within the grounds of the Temple Mount, a man-made plateau considered holy by both Muslims and Jews.

Dozens of Palestinian youths gathered to throw rocks and firecrackers at the police from atop the mount after Israeli officers opened the Mughrabi Gate, the only non-Muslim entrance to the site. Police forces stormed the riot with tear gas, stun grenades, and rubber bullets, dispersing the protesters. Three suspects were arrested.

Earlier this month, hundreds of Palestinians rioted and threw rocks at the police after a Friday prayer.

The Dome of the Rock, Temple Mount's landmark, is the third most sacred site in Islam, after Mecca and Medina and enshrines the rock where Muslims believe the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven.

The Palestinians claim east Jerusalem, including the Old City in which Temple Mount is housed, as the capital of their future state. Control over the holy site remains perhaps the most sensitive issue in peace talks.
