Online dating scam: Androgynous woman steals mobile devices from her dates

A woman in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing whose androgynous looks allowed her to present herself as both a man and a woman on multiple dating websites was arrested last week after stealing cell phones and tablets from her dates.
During the Lunar New Year, posing as a man, Zhang arranged a date with a woman. Claiming that her phone had run out of battery, she borrowed the woman's phone, but never returned it.
After the victim reported to the incident, investigators found that a similar case had been reported by a local man.
Police were initially confused by the suspect's gender, as she had used the same username for the dating app in the both reported cases.
After days of investigation, Zhang was arrested and charged with the theft of five cell phones and a tablet device, worth a total of over US$3,300 (20,000 RMB).
