The Malaysian government announced on Monday plans to expand the search area for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, according to a BBC report.

The original search zone spread over a 50 nautical miles radius around the point where the flight was last spotted. After scouring the waters without making any discoveries, investigators decided to double the search area.

Malaysia has dispatched 18 aircrafts and 27 ships as part of the search, while China has sent four ships and adjusted ten satellites to help locate the jet. Apart from Malaysia and China, seven other countries have joined the search.

The missing aircraft left Kuala Lumpur at 12.41 a.m. local time on Saturday, en route to Beijing. It disappeared 40 minutes after takeoff.

The airliner last made contact with air traffic controllers some 120 nautical miles off the eastern coast of the Malaysian town of Kota Bharu.
