An Iraq war veteran opened fire on late Wednesday (April 2) at Fort Hood military base in Texas, killing three people and injuring 14 before turning his gun on himself.

The shooting occurred at around 4:25 p.m. Initial reports said the incident started as a soldier-on-soldier attack near a motor pool in the area between Motor Pool Road and Tank Destroyer Boulevard.

A witness said that 10 to 20 shots were fired.

The shooter, a 34-year old white male, was identified as soldier Ivan Lopez.

Fort Hood officials advised all personnel via messages, Twitter and its Website, saying: "Shelter in place immediately. This is not a test." They were advised to close doors and stay away from windows.

Students and personnel at neighboring Central Texas College were ordered to evacuate the central campus, while the college cancelled classes for the rest of the day.

Federal, state, military and local authorities are involved in the investigation.
Gen Milley said that the suspect had served in Iraq and was suffering from anxiety and depression. He was being assessed to see if he had post-traumatic stress disorder, BBC reported.

This is the second shooting accident at Fort Hood in the last few years. On Nov. 5, 2009, Army psychiatrist Nidal Malik Hasan opened fire at the military base, killed 12 soldiers and one civilian, and injured 29 others before police managed to stop him by shooting at him.

He is now on the military's death row.
