The Syrian government reportedly dropped barrel bombs on a vegetable market near Aleppo on Thursday, killing at least 25 people, activists said.

The air raids targeted a busy market in the city of Atareb, a vibrant commercial hub before the advent of the Syrian civil war. The airstrike was launched in the morning, when many people were shopping.

"The regime is hitting back against the civilians who support the revolt against President Bashar al-Assad," said activist Abu Omar in an interview with AFP. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights put the death toll at 25, including two women and three children.

The Syrian air force often resorts to barrel bombs, as they are powerful and easy-to-make explosive devices, which can be built by packing shrapnel, explosives and oil into a barrel.

It is estimated that more than 150,000 people have been killed since the Syrian civil war broke out in 2011.
