Six Buffalo police officers have been placed on administrative leave after a witness videotaped them using excessive force during the arrest of John Willet on April 19.

Willet had been pulled over for speeding when he ditched his vehicle and tried to run away.

"I ran because of the fact that I did have some type of drugs on me," he said in an interview. "So, I ran and I figured I'd probably get away but it didn't work out that way."

Police pursued Willet and he eventually surrendered.

Willet said, "I put my hands up and that's when I got the first swing to my face. I surrendered. I stopped. I put my hands up. It was no more point to run."

An onlooker recorded two officers kneeing Willet in the face after he was handcuffed on the ground. Willet can be heard begging officers to stop as the punches continue with four officers holding him down. The end of the video shows six officers standing over him with one continuing the abuse with multiple slaps to Willet's face.

Police found heroin in Willet's pants pocket and crack cocaine inside his vehicle.

"I just got caught up wrong time, wrong situation, did the wrong things, and kind of messed myself up. But at the same time I didn't deserve that," Willet said.

Willet was arrested for drug possession and resisting arrest. All six officer have been placed on administrative leave while police further the investigation.
