Scientists in New York announced on Monday they had used human cloning techniques to create stem cells able to produce insulin and therefore cure diabetes.

For the first time the scientists have successfully replaced the damaged DNA of a type 1 diabetes sufferer with the healthy genetic material of an infant donor, the Telegraph reported.

Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body's immune system destroys insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas resulting in insulin deficiency and high blood-sugar levels.

The procedure, which produced Dolly the Sheep in 1996, is called somatic cell nuclear transfer. It implies removing the nuclear DNA from an ovum, fusing it with a cell from a living person, and stimulating each ovum to begin dividing and multiplying, Reuters reported. The resulting embryo includes stem cells that can differentiate into any human cell type.

The hope is that when these new cells are injected back into a diabetic patient, they will begin to produce insulin.

According to the Telegraph, the technique would prevent the need for daily insulin injections and effectively cure the disease.

It is also hoped that in future the procedure could be adopted to cure a wide range of diseases such as Parkinsons, macular degeneration, multiple sclerosis, and liver diseases and for replacing or repairing damaged bones.
