Gizem Akdeniz's murder: Turkish man allegedly tortured, murdered his 6-year-old cousin

Suleyman Akdeniz, who reportedly confessed to torturing and killing his 6-year-old cousin Gizem Akdeniz in a case that has riveted Turkey, was transferred to a sponge room in a high-security prison to prevent him from inflicting self-harm.
The murder occurred on April 27. Gizem Akendiz was playing in a playground near home while her mother left for the market. Suleyman Akdeniz, aged 25, allegedly lured the girl into his car by saying that they were going on a picnic.
According to Today's Zaman, Akendiz allegedly tied his cousin with box tape and brought her to a countryside cemetery, where he stabbed her. Then, he poured gasoline on the child and set her body on fire. Local media reported that Akdeniz even visited the girl's home to feign helping in the search effort.
Akdeniz's disappearance led to a large-scale search operation that involved police units, rescue teams and experts from Ankara. Helicopters were deployed to locate the missing girl, whose body was later found near the Seyhan reservoir.
Akdeniz reportedly killed the young child in revenge for her father's refusal to let him marry Gizem's elder sister.
