Online dating gone wrong: German woman held captive, assaulted by North Carolina man

Robert Whiteside, a 45-year-old resident of North Carolina, was accused of holding a German woman he met online as hostage for several days.
During her captivity, the victim was stripped of all her money, physically and sexually assaulted and threatened with her life.
The 34-year-old woman from Germany met Robert Whiteside on a dating website. The bathtub repairman invited her to visit him in the United States and offered to pay all the expenses.
The victim arrived at the warehouse in North Carolina where Whiteside lived and worked on June 4. The warehouse had a hidden bedroom, which could be opened by pushing a warehouse wall. Once inside he allegedly beat her up and threatened to kill her if she ran away.
"He kept her with him at all times," Zebulon Police Chief Timothy Hayworth told reporters. "We believe that he physically assaulted her, sexually assaulted her and never really let her out of his sight."
He also forced the woman to send emails to demand money from her estranged husband, who then contacted the Zebulon police.
Whiteside was arrested and the woman was freed on Monday. She was said to be in a good condition.
Whiteside is now facing charges of human trafficking and assault by strangulation. Prosecution said more charges are forthcoming. He was released on $90,000 bail, which was brought down from $250,000 on the condition that he agreed to be surveilled by electronic monitors.
