Newly released security camera footage showing a western Vermont woman's attempt to slit the throat of an officer during an arrest in 2012 has rekindled a debate surrounding her acquittal late last month.

Jennifer Berube, 40, was acquitted on June 30 of an attempted murder charge by a jury in Rutland after her defense attorneys successfully argued she was merely trying to scare the officer and not actually kill him.

Berube, homeless at the time, was arrested in December 2012 along with her ex-husband for attempting to use a stolen credit card. She managed to sneak a Leatherman tool, hidden in her jacket, into the police station.

Berube claimed in court she heard her ex attempting to hang himself in his holding cell and in an attempt to help him, devised a plan that involved stabbing an officer with a two-inch blade.

The officer suffered a cut an inch away from his jugular vein. Berube's lawyers claimed this demonstrated the former registered nurse's intent wasn't to kill the officer.
