19-year-old Kristen Milano of Southington, Connecticut, is dead after a prank by her brother's friend went very wrong.
Eric Morelli drove from his home on Sunday morning to Milano's apartment with the practical joke in mind.
He lit a sparkler and chucked it through a bedroom window, expecting it to startle Kristen's brother.
Unbeknowst to Morelli, his friend was actually sleeping downstairs at the time while Kristen lay asleep in her mother's bed.
When the fire started the brother ran out of the house, but Kristen, asleep, was still in the bedroom.
The family was initially relieved, thinking Kristen wasn't home and that only their belongings had been lost.
It wasn't until emergency responders found her body in the charred house that they discovered she had been inside all along and had died of smoke inhalation.
Morelli is being charged with manslaughter and three counts of reckless endangerment. His lawyer says he has been fully cooperative with law enforcement and will be responding to the charges in court.
