An officer was shot dead and several other people were injured in a spate of violence that took place in Indianapolis' nightclub district over the July 4th weekend.
In the first incident, shots were exchanged in the crowded Broad Ripple neighborhood after two men reportedly bumped into each other on the sidewalk early on Saturday. Both pulled out handguns and fired at each other, injuring a woman and six men.
In separate incident that evening, two officers responded to a report of shots being fired in the 3400 block of Forest Manor. As the two approached a group of people in the alley, a man with a rifle began shooting, prompting the police to return fire. One officer was fatally shot, while the shooter was critically injured.
The suspect, identified as Major Davis Jr., faces a preliminary charge of murder.
Police said they would meet with Broad Ripple business owners to discuss ways control street congestion and to intercede in minor disputes before they escalate to violence. The neighborhood has seen two other major shootings in 11 months.
