At least three people were killed after a 6.9-magnitude earthquake rocked southern Mexico and neighbouring Guatemala on Monday morning, according to an AFP report.

The quake was measured at 7.1-magnitude initially, but it was lowered to 6.9-magnitude later. The 60 kilometre-deep epicentre was near the Mexican city of Tapachula, which is about 280 kilometres away from the Guatemalan capital. Tremors could be felt in as far as Mexico City and El Salvador.

"With the reports we have so far, we can say this quake has caused moderate damage. It's not light damage," said Guatemalan President Otto Perez.
Two people in Mexico were killed in the earthquake. According to AFP, the victims were 51 years old and 74 years old respectively. 35 others were injured, with two suffering from critical injuries. Seventy homes were also destroyed.

In Guatemala, a newborn was killed after ceilings of a hospital collapsed. Media also reported the death of a woman in Quetzaltenango who died of a heart attack. However, it has not been verified whether her death was related to the earthquake.

Thirty-six people in the municipality of San Sebastian Huehuetenango, Guatemala were evacuated.
The total toll has not been confirmed yet, but it is likely to rise as more information flows in.

The region often experiences tremors because of its geological position. The Mexican capital was hit by a 5.4-magnitude quake two months ago, and in November 2012, 48 people perished after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake swept through western Guatemala.
