Costa Rica's loss to Holland on July 5 was marred by a violence that broke out when thousands of fans watched the game in the San Jose's Democracy Plaza. Two men were stabbed, while a third man was hit on the head with a bottle.
During the game on Saturday, the two teams tied nil all during the regular 90 minutes plus the extra time, so the game rolled into a penalty shootout. Costa Rica missed two out of the five penalty kicks, allowing Holland to beat them 4-3.
However, at the final whistle, a brawl among Costa Rican fans broke out in in the plaza. Police have not released details on what caused fighting to break out However, they confirmed that two men were stabbed.
One of the men suffered stab wounds to his lower back. The attack on the other left a knife jutting from his back when police arrived. A third man was hit on the head by a bottle.
The three injured men were rushed to local hospitals. Police have since arrested eight people, including a man identified only by his last names Delgadillo Ruiz. He is charged with possessing a weapon.
