Costa Concordia refloating: the doomed ship is towed away for scrapping

Two and a half years after it crashed off the Italian island of Giglio, today the Costa Concordia is finally going to be refloated and towed away for scrapping.

To lift the giant ship, Air will be pumped into 30 giant caissons attached to the body of the ship to help refloating the wreck. On Monday, the ship will be lifted only two meters, then checked to ensure the wreck won't break up and release toxic substances trapped in the ship for more than two years.
The ship will then be moved by tugboats 30 meters eastwards. If the operation goes well, it will be refloated by a further 12 meters before it can be towed away.

The ship will be towed to the Italian port of Genova at a speed of 3.7 kilometers per hour, and there it will be scrapped. Environmental clean-up crews will stand by to clean up any toxic substances that may leak from the ship during the operation.
