Malaysian Airlines plane crash: passenger jet shot down over Ukraine, 295 dead

A Malaysian airliner was shot down over eastern Ukraine, near Russia on Thursday, reportedly killing all 295 people aboard.

Malaysian Airlines flight MH17, a Boeing 777, was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur with 280 passengers and 15 crew members on board. It departed from Amsterdam at 12:15 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive at Kuala Lumpur at 6:10 a.m. local time.

The plane was flying at an altitude of 33,000 feet when it was reportedly hit by a missile fired from a BUK launcher, according to a USA Today report. The plane crashed near the city of Donetsk, about 50 km from the Russian border, Reuters reported.

According to the Telegraph, plane wreckage and dead bodies have been located in the town of Torez in the Donetsk Region. Malaysian authorities are launching an immediate investigation into the incident.
