Decapitated head ‘That’s my boy’ photo tweeted by Australian jihadist Khaled Sharrouf in Syria

For weeks, Australians have been aghast at the stream of gory images uploaded by two of their countrymen fighting for the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.

Former boxer Mohamed Elomar and convicted terrorist Khaled Sharrouf, both from Sydney, are believed to be leading a squad of English speaking ISIS militants. But it’s this photo that Khaled Sharrouf posted on Twitter of his son hoisting the decapitated head of a Syrian soldier which has raised the greatest outcry.

How did Sharrouf, born in Sydney and who went to Chester Hill High, become the hardened terrorist he is today?

At age 19, suffering schizophrenic hallucinations exacerbated by drug use he sought help at a local mosque, and later gravitated toward radical local preachers. In 2005, Sharrouf was arrested in Operation Pendennis with bomb materials meant for an attack on the Lucas Heights nuclear reactor.

He pled guilty to terrorism charges but got a reduced sentence, partially owing to testimony by his psychiatrist that he was now medicated for schizophrenia and had lost interest in organized religious activity.

He was released in 2009 and immediately resumed contact with local extremists. Sharrouf was under surveillance and his passport was suspended, but In December 2013, he managed to fly to Kuala Lumpur with his family by using his brother’s passport. Since then he’s been Tweeting photos of his sons by his side while he participates in various atrocities.

The boys’ grandfather in Sydney is begging the Australian government to get them back. Arrest warrants have been issued for Khaled Sharrouf and Mohamed Elomar, should they re-enter Australia.
