Union Pacific trains carrying toxic chemicals collide in Arkansas, killing two
  • 9 years ago
Two Union Pacific freight trains crashed into each other in northeast Arkansas early Sunday, killing two crew members and wounding two others.

The trains were transporting cargos of toxic chemicals. According to The Wall Street Journal, both trains were carrying a total of 14 different chemicals.

Authorities said the trains were running on the same track at time of the accident. The head-on collision sparked a fire, which was intensified by the diesel from the trains and an alcoholic beverage carried in a tank car of one of the trains.

About 500 residents living within 1.5 miles of the crash site were evacuated as a precautionary measure. It took firefighters seven hours to put out the fire.

Investigators said no toxic materials were leaked in the crash. They are now looking into why two trains were operating on the same track before the accident. “We will be looking at train signal information, train braking, track information, train operations and how the crew operated the trains,” said NTSB investigator Mike Hiller in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.
