US drone base to be built in Niger’s Agadez city in fight against Boko Haram and other militants

The United States plans to send more drones to a Saharan city in Niger that puts them closer to Islamist militants blamed for attacks in the region.

After months of negotiations, Niger has authorised the U.S. to set up its second surveillance hub in Agadez, its second in the country.

In response to increased terrorist activity from Boko Haram and other al Qaeda-linked groups, the U.S. and France are expanding their military presence in the region in response to increased Islamist terrorist activity. The allies set up joint surveillance drone hangars outside Niger’s capital Niamey in 2013, where 120 U.S. troops and 300 French troops were stationed.

Nigerien officials told Reuters on Tuesday the U.S. has been given consent to set up a surveillance drone base in Agadez. It is unclear whether drones will continue to operate from Niamey.
