Unconscious pilot of private plane flies over DC before crashing into ocean

A small private plane drifted into restricted airspace above Washington DC on Saturday.

The U.S. Air Force scrambled up two F16s and the jet pilots flew close enough to the plane to see into the cockpit. Upon inspection, the pilot of the Cirrus SR22 plane was observed to be unconscious.

The F-16s followed the private plane as it flew away from the U.S. capital and towards the coastline. The plane flew for around 50 miles over the Virginia coast, before it finally ran out of fuel and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter attempted to locate the downed aircraft, but was forced to turn back after finding no sign of the plane.

A C-130 plane and a Coast Guard cutter also aided in the search but as night fell, the small aircraft had not been found.
