Tacoma police uses ‘cell site simulator’ to track phone data

The Tacoma Police Department said on Wednesday that it is in possession of a cell site simulator, a spy device used for tracking cellphone data.

Known as a Stingray, the device is also called a cell site simulator. It is a portable spying device that is able to track cellphone signals even inside vehicles and buildings.

The device acts as a fake cell tower. It sends out a powerful signal that tricks the targeted cellphone into connecting to the fake network.

It then determines the phone’s location by analysing the signal strength, according to an FBI document published on Leak Source.

The device is capable of collecting historical phone data such as call history, text messages and emails within a half-mile radius, according to the Sacramento Bee.

The device not only tracks the targeted cell phone, but can also extract data from other cellphone users in the area.

Tacoma police say the device is used to find suspects in connection with felony level crimes and it does not store the data of innocent people, the Sacramento Bee reported.
