Subway station blast from possible fire extinguisher bomb injures lunchgoers in Santiago, Chile
  • 9 years ago
An explosion went off at the Escuela Militar metro station in the upscale Las Condes area of Santiago, Chile on Monday. At least seven people were injured by flying debris and fragments.

Mario Rozas, head of police communications, said the explosion went off at a mini-mall by the subway station at around 2:00 p.m. local time.

Security cameras showed two suspects planted a device in a metal container, possibly a trash can, outside the fast-food restaurant and escaped in a car, according to Interior Minister Mahmud Aleuy.

Local health officials said one woman had at least one of her fingers amputated while others suffered hearing losses, but none of the injuries were fatal.

No group has stepped forward to claim responsibility for the blast, but there have been several attacks by anarchist groups in recent years, Reuters reports.

“This is a cowardly act because it has as its objective to hurt people, create fear and even kill innocent people," Reuters reported President Michelle Bachelet as saying.

"We're going to use all the weight of the law, including the anti-terrorist law, because those responsible for these acts have to pay," she said.
