Mohammad Fadhlan becomes second Malaysian jihadist killed in Syria

A 21-year old Malaysian jihadist was reportedly killed on Tuesday after being hit by shrapnel as jihadist fighters were fleeing a Syrian military attack near east Hama.

Syrian warplanes and tanks opened fire on a military base in east Hama, forcing jihadists to flee in trucks and other vehicles.

Among the fleeing jihadists was Mohammad Fadhlan Shahidi Mohammad Khir, a 21-year-old Malaysian. He was hit by shrapnel and fell from the speeding truck.

Other jihadists in another vehicle picked up Fadhlan but he died shortly after. “Fadhlan died in the arms of a comrade,” Salman told the Star.

Fadhlan sent a text message to his mother in May, telling her he would become a fighter in Syria. His family did not believe him initially and only realised he was in Syria after seeing his posts on Facebook.

Fadhlan was the fifth of eight children in his family, the Star reported. He flew to Syria via Istanbul on May 13.

Zainan Harith, a 52-year-old man who went by the name Abu Turob, was believed to be the first Malaysian jihadist killed in Syria. He died on August 19.
