Freddie Gray Baltimore riots: Prisoner claims Gray ‘intentionally’ hurt himself - TomoNews

Claims from a prisoner who was in the police van with Freddie Gray might shed some light on the puzzling death that sparked a fresh round of police protests across the nation.

The Washington Post obtained a Baltimore police report containing interview notes from the man who shared a short van ride with Gray. The unidentified man is currently in prison, the Post reported.

The details of the roughly 40 minutes Freddie spent in the back of a police van remain a mystery. But a second prisoner who was picked up at 8:59 says he thinks Gray hurt himself intentionally.

The man reportedly heard “banging against the walls” of the vehicle and believed that Gray “was intentionally trying to injure himself,” according to the report.

The Washington Post obtained the report from the Baltimore police department but was not allowed to release the prisoner’s name.

Baltimore police went back on their claims that the police investigation into Freddie Gray’s arrest would be made public on Friday.

On Thursday morning, Commissioner Anthony Batts announced the department would be turning the case over to a Maryland state prosecutor instead.

Batts also told reporters 30 detectives were assigned to the investigation.

The decision to charge any of the six officers involved in the arrest is in the hands of Marilyn Mosby, the state’s attorney for Baltimore.
