Unemployment in France rises again

There has been a second consecutive monthly rise in the number of people out of work in France. Data from the Labour Ministry showed the number of registered job seekers in mainland France rose by 15,400 last month to just over 3.5 million.

That’s a jump of 0.4 percent on the previous month and 4.9 percent year-on-year. The figures are close to an all-time high.

There was a spike in the number of young people out of work rising by one percent from February to 542,300.

President Francois Hollande and his socialist government have seen their ratings slump as they have struggled to live up to promises to bring down unemployment.
