Chile declared a state of emergency as a the Calbuco volcano erupted after being inactive for over 40 years. Presidenta Cristina Fernández met with russian leader Vladimir Putin, as part of a two day visit marking 130 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations. According to a U.N report, an average of 70 people were killed everyday in Afghanistan last year. Un secretary-general Ban Ki-Moon voiced concern over continued fighting in Yemen. Some 220 migrants rescued at sea arrived in the island of Sicily.
