Local elections were held yesterday in Cuba for municipal assemblies, in which 27,000 candidates vied for 12,589 posts. Candidates are nominated by their communities and do not need to be affiliated to the Communist Party. Of the country's 8 million voters, 7 million went to the polls. Run-off elections in races in which no candidate received 50% of the vote will be held on April 26. teleSUR
