Boko Haram and Nigerian government agree to ceasefire and ‘Bring back our girls’

The Nigerian government and the Islamic militant group Boko Haram may have finally reached a cease fire agreement that includes the return of the abducted girls. It’s been six months since Boko Haram militants abducted 276 girls from the Nigerian village of Chibok.

Nigerian presidential aide Hassan Tukur, who previously negotiated with Boko Haram in Chad said on Friday that Nigeria has agreed to a ceasefire with the Islamic militant group who are still holding 200 of the girls hostage.

"Boko Haram issued the ceasefire as a result of the discussions we have been having with them," Turkur told BBC Focus on Africa. "They have agreed to release the Chibok girls."

The release would be celebrated by Nigerian people but some have their doubts on the credibility of Boko Haram’s representative Danladi Ahmadu.

“I have never heard of such a man,” Shehu Sani who has led previous negotiations with Boko Haram told AFP. “If a ceasefire were to come, it would come from the group’s leader Abubakar Shekau.

Ahmadu claims to be Bolko Haram’s Saudi Arabia-based secretary general but admitted that he’s never met Shekau.
