Cosmetic surgery death: UK woman dies in Thailand after shady beauty procedure

A 24-year-old UK woman became the latest cosmetic surgery fatality after she died over the weekend following a procedure by a not-exactly-certified Bangkok doctor.
Not long before her death, Joy Williams had undergone what’s known as “BodyTite” at a cosmetic surgery clinic in Bangkok. The procedure is a type of liposuction where fat is melted with radio waves and sucked out.
Heat is then applied on the skin’s surface and almost like ironing a shirt, the skin is smoothed and flattened as the fat is removed.
We can’t say for sure what killed Williams, but reports say it was a ‘tailbone’ correction, which sounds a lot like code for some sort of buttocks beautification procedure.
Thailand is a global leader in cheap cosmetic surgery. Over 26 million tourists visited in 2013, and 2.5 million of those went to Thailand specifically for medical reasons.
Bangkok has numerous clinics and hospitals that now even offer ‘discount surgery’ packages.
But maybe a good rule to follow is if a medical procedure is advertized as “60% OFF till Christmas!!” ---a bit more thought might be in order.
