Robbery fails: Convenience store owner uses chili powder twice to stop crooks

Saadat Khan owns a convenience store in Stoneham, Massachusetts that has seen two attempted robberies, but he wields a powerful, unconventional weapon: chili powder.

In both cases the robbers initially tried to distract him then intimidate him with their handguns. But Khan's calm, nonchalant demeanor along with his sheer defiance seems to confuse the robbers.

In the first incident, in 2012, the robber demanded he go behind the counter and give him money, but Khan simply said, “No, you want the cash, you open the register yourself.” When the wannabe crook tried to get at the register, Khan used chili powder to blind one of them and a struggle ensued. The robber and his accomplice decided Khan was not the easy target they were hoping for and fled.

In this latest incident, Khan once again became suspicious after two men came in to cash a lottery ticket for small change. One of them pulled out a handgun and demanded money. Khan once again stubbornly refused and said, “Do it yourself.” Same trick, different day. Khan used his eye-searing spice mix on the robber with the gun, causing him to run around like a bull in a china shop. The well-seasoned pair were later caught in Revere, Massachusetts, more than likely trying to figure out a way to ice their scorched eyeballs.
