Syria Crisis: U.S. airstrikes target Al-Qaeda-linked militants Khorasan

The United States military launched a series of airstrikes around the northern Syrian town of Sarmada near the border with Turkey early on Thursday, targeting the al Qaeda-linked Khorasan group. There are unconfirmed reports that a French jihadist and bomber associated with the group was killed during the assault.

The U.S. military struck five Khorasan targets near a strategic border crossing with Turkey. The attack reportedly hit training and bomb-making facilities and fighters, likely killing 24-year-old French bombmaker David Drugeon.

The U.S. military said in a statement that the air strikes against the Khorasan group “were not in response” to recent fighting between al Nusra militants and other moderate rebels.

The Khorasan group is a small network of al Qaeda-linked militants from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Chechnya and North Africa that has ties with al Qaeda’s affiliate in Syria, the al Nusra Front. The name “Khorasan group” was coined by the U.S. government, which says Khorasan group was established by veteran al Qaeda terrorists in Syria not to participate in the Syrian civil war but to hatch plots to attack the west.
