Cancer test fail: Expired test kits sold to doctors in Taiwan are risking lives
  • 9 years ago
The FDA Division of Taipei is currently conducting an investigation into the Medado Trading Co for allegedly tampering with the expiration dates of four kinds of cancer screening tests.

The company had purchased the tests from a registered pharmaceutical manufacturing company in 2011.

An anonymous whistle blower said that he had purchased the screening kits from Medado Trading Co, but thought that the labels looked suspiciously thick. His assistant used a hair dryer to heat the labels and then carefully pulled off the top label, exposing the original expiration date.

The company’s proprietor and sales manager connived to relabel the screening tests in order to meet the requirements of the Tri-Service General Hospital’s Songshan Branch. The hospital required that all products have a six month or longer expiration date from the purchasing date.

Medado Trading Co allegedly relabeled the cancer screening tests because the drugs were just one month shy of the hospital’s requirement and because they did not want to shoulder the financial loss.

Screening test expiration dates are guidelines for doctors and medical practitioners as an expired product could yield a false positive or negative result for cancer.

Unfortunately, even if convicted for violating the Pharmaceutical Affairs Act, both men would only serve a sentence of less than three years and pay a fine of no more than US$3,300.

The FDA Division of Taipei has issued a formal request that all hospitals and clients to check the expiration dates of any products purchased from Medado Trading Co. Since the company is only a sales agency, there is no way to track sales records via the National Health Insurance’s program system.
