Bird bomb? Afghan police shoot, kill bird with antenna that may have been an endangered species

Afghan police say they shot and killed a bird carrying a bomb in a region ravaged by Taliban violence on Saturday.

A bird equipped with an antenna was flying over a police checkpoint on a highway in northern Faryab province, Khaama Press reported.

Police began tracking it at around 8 a.m. and decided to shoot the bird after noticing the antenna, NBC News reported.

The bird exploded, scattering metal debris. Police reportedly found parts of what appeared to be a GPS and camera, according to NBC News.

However, footage obtained by NBC News shows that among the debris from the bird was a tag that appeared to indicate the bird was being monitored by the Emirates Center for Conservation of Houbara. The tag bore the letters ECCH- Houbara Conservation and a telephone number in Uzbekistan.

The bird appears to have been a Houbara Bustard, an endangered species being monitored by the center.
