Sony Pictures cyberattack: North Korea does not deny involvement

Investigators looking into this month’s devastating cyberattack on Sony Pictures have reportedly found links to North Korea.

The hack was launched on November 24 and affected computers running Microsoft’s Windows operating system but not Apple computers, Reuters reported.

The attack forced Sony to shut down its internal network to prevent further damage. Staff had to resort to pen and paper to complete their tasks, take calls on landline phones and use fax machines, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Sensitive data were stolen and released online on Wednesday, information on including salary, personal passwords, credit card numbers and medical histories, Re/code reported, Reuters reported. Five movies that have not been released in theaters were also leaked.

The security breach occurred a month before the release of the Sony Pictures film The Interview, which depicts a fictional CIA plot to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un. North Korea has not directly denied involvement the hack, according to the BBC.
