Islamic State struggling? US-led air strikes take out several of group’s top leaders in Iraq

US-led air strikes on Islamic State targets in Iraq in recent weeks have killed several of the group’s top leaders and are disrupting the Islamist group’s operations, senior US officials have said.

Between December 3 and December 9 the air strikes have killed the chief of the Islamic State’s military operations in Iraq, as well as an important deputy to Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, officials said.

Another strike in late November killed the group’s governor in the strategically important city of Mosul in Northern Iraq, they added.

The continuing campaign has taken out several of the group’s senior and mid level commanders, and US officials believe the air strikes are beginning to significantly weaken the leadership structure of the Islamic State in Iraq.

The strikes are also thought to have had an effect on the Islamic State’s logistics and finance operations.

The officials told the Wall Street Journal that the air strikes were meant to create the conditions for an eventual operation to isolate and then retake Mosul.
