Delta gun smuggling ring busted: Airline employee bought loaded firearms on dozens of Delta flights

An historic security breach has been uncovered at one of the busiest airports in the United States. Investigators in New York broke up the elaborate gun smuggling ring that landed more than 150 illegal guns on Brooklyn the streets.

Eugene Harvey, 31, a Delta Airline baggage handler in at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta was arrested and charged with trafficking firearms, violating airport security and aiding others in the scheme.

For eight months, Harvey snuck guns past security passing them off to Mark Henry, 38, a former Delta employee who was fired in 2010.

Henry would go through security as usual, flying on a buddy pass, a benefit from his mother, a retired Delta employee.

The men would meet in the restroom and other places in the airport to make the swap.

In total, 153 guns were recovered as part of the investigation from nearly 20 flights from Atlanta to New York, the Brooklyn District Attorneys Office said Tuesday.

Police caught on to their scheme after one of their accomplices, Earnest Lanauex, 48, of Brooklyn sold one of the guns to an undercover officer.

Henry was arrested in New York on December 10 after landing at John F. Kennedy International Airport with 18 handguns in his bag -- seven of which were loaded, the affidavit said.
