Virgin Atlantic flight VS43 makes emergency landing after gear fail

A Virgin Atlantic plane made a non-standard landing at London’s Gatwick airport on Monday after reporting technical issues with its undercarriage.
Flight VS43 took off at 11.44am from Gatwick and was heading to Las Vegas, in Nevada.
After discovering a technical issue with the landing gear, the plane, with at least 400 passengers on board, started circling over Gatwick and the coast of Sussex.
According to initial reports, the plane made at least two low level passes over Gatwick airport’s control tower where staff using binoculars tried to understand what the problem was,
They believed the problematic wheel was the one under the right wing, which didn’t lower or could not lock into position.
The plane eventually made a non-standard landing, with emergency services waiting on the runway, the BBC said.
According to Mike Kaufman, a passenger quoted by the BBC, the landing was “one of the greatest emergency landings in history. It was very smooth."
According to the Guardian, some passengers were slightly injured. The runway was closed until 6 pm, delaying departing flights. Inbound flights were directed to other airports.
