The World Health Organization said on Monday that the number of Ebola cases in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea has now reached more than 20,000.

The latest figures released by the WHO show that Ebola case incidence in Guinea has been fluctuating since September. Case incidence has been declining in Sierra Leone, though transmission is the most intense in the western part of the country. Case incidence has been declining in Liberia since mid-November

A total of 20,081 people have been infected in the three West African countries as of December 27. Of these, 7,842 have died.

Peter Piot, the Belgian microbiologist who helped discover the Ebola virus, told the BBC that the outbreak is likely to last until the end of 2015.
