Shocking microwave fire accident: blind man engulfed in flames after trying to heat dry towel

A legally blind Pennsylvania man died last week after accidentally setting himself on fire while attempting to warm up a towel in his microwave, according to a local report.
In order to combat a bout of leg pain he was suffering from last Tuesday, James Shaffer thought he'd warm up a towel, WJAC reports.
What the 68-year-old, sadly didn't realize though, was that towels begin to smolder before eventually catching fire when placed inside microwaves.
When Shaffer next tried to pick the cloth out of the device he was reportedly engulfed by flames that went on to leave burns covering 80 percent of his body.
“He went to grab the towel. Being blind, he pulled it back on himself and caught his arm,” said Oakland Fire Department deputy chief David Ream, according to WJAC. “The flannel shirt caught fire and then it just burnt the rest of his clothing off of him."
While Shaffer, who had lived alone the last quarter-century, managed to put out the flames by making his way to his bathroom, he sadly succumbed to smoke inhalation soon after repeatedly apologizing to paramedics for the predicament he felt he had put them in.
The unfortunate accident has reportedly hit Shaffer's close-knit Stonycreek Township community hard as neighbors have noted him to be amongst kindest people they'd ever met.
