Alexander Litvinenko inquiry: Autopsy on ex-KGB spy “most dangerous" ever
  • 9 years ago
The London High Court was told Wednesday that the post-mortem examination performed on former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko was the most dangerous ever in the western world because of the high levels of a rare radioactive isotope.

Pathologists involved in Litvinenko’s autopsy were required to wear two protective suits, a special ventilation hood and two pairs of surgical gloves.

Emergency staff waited outside the room in case any of the examiners fainted, the Financial Times reported.

Litvinenko died after he drank tea poisoned with polonium-210 during a meeting with Russians Andrei Lugovoy and Dmitri Kovtun at the bar of the Millennium Hotel in London on November 1st, 2006.

Litvinenko became sick shortly after the encounter. He died several weeks later after suffering liver and kidney failures, heart attacks and catastrophic bone-marrow failure.

Two days before his death, his urine and blood samples tested positive for alpha radiation poisoning. Medical experts said if atomic scientists had not conducted the tests when Litvinenko was still alive, they would never have discovered the cause of the former spy’s death.

During the inquiry, the lawyer for the Litvinenko family accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of ordering the assassination of Litvinenko, who accused Putin of close links with the mafia.

British authorities initially refused to launch an enquiry into Litvinenko’s death, but the government decided to start one last July. The British government dismissed the current Ukraine crisis as a factor in the change-of-heart.
