Child predator escapes sex offender registry because filming child isn't felony in Oregon
  • 9 years ago
Bradley McCollum of Beaverton, Oregon, has just been sentenced to two years behind bars for secretly filming a child in the nude for four consecutive years. But due to a quirk in Oregon State law, he won't be a registered sex offender.

McCollum was friends with the Reed family across the street, and invited them to his beach house. What the Reeds didn't know is that, in 2010, McCollum hid a camera in his own beach house specifically to record their 13-year-old daughter, Madison.

The Reeds saw McCollum as family, and didn't notice when he also hid a camera in Madison's room in their house too. It was only four years later, when Madison's dad, Clark Reed, caught McCollum near Madison's room that he became suspicious.

That's when they discovered the hidden camera.

Now the trial is over and McCollum has been convicted of burglary and invasion of privacy, but prosecutors couldn't prove a sex crime charge. That means McCollum won't be registered as a sex offender, because under Oregon law, he didn't compel Madison to get naked on video.

Now, while McCollum breezes through his two-year sentence, the Reed family, and a growing number supporters, are pushing for a bill to make the secret filming of a naked child a felony sex crime.
