Abuse of power? Cop pulls gun on kids 'having a snowball fight' in response to 911 handgun report

A pair of videos uploaded to Facebook recently show Sergeant Joseph Salerno of the New Rochelle Police Department in New York pointing a gun at teens who were reportedly “having a snowball fight.”
It’s unclear from the video alone why officers were dispatched to Horton Avenue and DeWitt Place. The second part of the video includes one bystander’s enraging explanation.
“They were having a snowball fight,” a bystander says. “This group of guys was having a snowball fight, and now the cop has a gun on them.”
The video went viral, and the officer was blasted by dozens of media outlets. But more details have since emerged that justify the officer’s actions when put into context.
A 911 call was made at 3:42 p.m. reporting a teen pointing a handgun at another teen. Both were part of a group of six.
Police responded and one of youths took off running. An accompanying officer pursued the gun-wielding suspect on foot. The other five teens complied with police orders as Salerno, seen in the video, secured the scene.
“There was no snowball fight,” New Rochelle Police Commissioner Anthony Murphy told the New York Daily News.
New Rochelle City Councilman Jared Rice heard the 911 call and confirmed there was a report of a man with a gun.
Police are still looking to identify the gun-wielding suspect who ran into an apartment.
