Eavesdropping Smart TV: Samsung warns users voice-activated TV may listen to private information

Samsung is warning owners of its voice-activated Smart TV that anything they discussed may be overheard.

Samsung's Smart TV's voice recognition feature is activated using a remote control and a microphone icon would appear on the screen letting owners know that Voice Recognition feature is on.

"Please be aware that if your spoken words include personal or other sensitive information, that information will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party through your use of Voice Recognition." according to the privacy policy of the Samsung Smart TV set.

When engaged, actionable voice data consists only of relevant TV commands or queries. However, it may also pick up and analyze personal information discussed within listening range and relay that information back to Samsung and a third party firm called Nuance for evaluation to further improve the feature.

According to Samsung, such data will not be retained nor sold to other third parties.

Nuance is a U.S.-based firm that provides speech and imaging analysis applications, including the software used in the Samsung Smart TV.

Owners can turn the feature off or disconnect the TV from the internet, however, this would prevent owners from using the interactive voice recognition features.
