Islamic State insurgents seized control of most of a town in western Iraq on Thursday, threatening an air base where more than 300 U.S. Marines are stationed.

“Ninety percent of al-Baghdadi district has fallen under the control of the insurgents,” district manager Naji Arak told Reuters.

Fighting has occurred in the vicinity of the Ain al-Asad air base, which is 5 km away from al-Baghdadi and where about 320 U.S. Marines are training Iraqi troops. A Pentagon spokeswoman told Reuters that there had been no direct attacks on the air base.
