Epic mushroom cloud appeared after West Virginia CSX train derailed
  • 9 years ago
A CSX train traveling from North Dakota’s shale fields to Yorktown, Virginia derailed on Monday. The train was carrying more than three million gallons of crude oil, much of which spilled and caused gigantic fireballs to shoot into the sky.

Following the derailment, at least one tanker entered the Kanawha River and another tanker rammed into a house before bursting into flames. Two hundred families from the two nearby towns of Adena Village and Boomer Bottom were evacuated. Nearby water treatment plants were also temporarily shut down.

It’s not yet clear what caused the derailment although the cold, snowy weather conditions may have been a factor. No injuries were reported, though the US Transportation Department is considering strengthening the current regulations regarding crude oil shipments.
