Woman gets hit by taxi, legs crushed between two cars in Times Square

A 42-year-old woman from California was critically injured on Monday morning after she was struck and pinned between two taxis in midtown Manhattan, police said.

The woman, identified as Rosemarie Mifsud, was reportedly hailing a cab to John F. Kennedy Airport with her brother-in-law just before the accident, according to the New York Daily News.

She was loading her luggage into the trunk of one taxi cab that was stopped at a red light in a middle lane on Seventh Avenue near 49th Street, when she was struck from behind by another taxi cab at around 5:50 a.m. Her legs were pinned between the bumpers of both vehicles, the New York Post reported. The Post added that witnesses saw a police officer use a belt as a tourniquet to stop the the bleeding.

Mifsu The woman was taken to a hospital with leg injuries and was expected to survive, police said.

“The only thing they told me, according to eyewitnesses on the scene, was that the cabbie was distracted and basically rammed into her. It was shocking,” her husband, William Mifsud, 43, told The Post.

Leslaw Zielinski, 61, the cab driver who was going to take Mifsud to the airport, blamed the accident on the other driver, saying he might have been distracted during the accident.

“The light changed and he moved quick and hit her,” he told The Post. “It was definitely his fault; I don’t know if he was looking at his phone or what.”

However, Mohamed Genedia, 34, the cab driver who hit Mifsud, said he couldn’t see her in the early morning darkness, according to The Post.

“I braked and I slid,” he said. “The brake didn’t help me. I thought I hit the car, not her. I didn’t see her. He pick up in the middle of the street,” Genedia said.
