Italian tourist killed by falling ice during trip to Alaska's Lake George Glacier

An Italian tourist on a trip to Alaska with a group of friends was killed on Sunday when a chunk of ice fell off a glacier and struck him.
Alexander Hellweger was among a group of eight tourists who took a helicopter ride to the head of Lake George Glacier on Sunday afternoon.
After arriving at the scenic spot, seven of the group were getting ready to take a group photo. Hellweger was away from the group and was trying to make his way back when a piece of ice fell from the glacier and struck him.
The rescue operation had to be halted because of approaching darkness and the potential for further ice falls. Rescuers recovered Hellweger’s body at around 2 p.m. the next day. The body was later flown to Girdwood Airport.
Alaska authorities said the weather was unseasonably warm and sunny on Sunday.
